The market

Supplying protective clothing to Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is the closest export market to Mumbai that we serve, at two to four days sailing to Colombo, and that single fact reshapes the commercial arithmetic. Freight cost per consignment is low enough that part loads make sense, so a buyer can hold two or three weeks of stock and reorder rather than committing capital to a container. Combined with preferential duty under the India-Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement, it gives Indian supply a landed cost position that suppliers from further afield cannot approach.

The demand base is broad rather than deep: apparel manufacturing in the free trade zones, the refinery and petroleum storage sector, port and logistics operations, construction, and tea and rubber processing. Individual orders tend to be smaller than Gulf or African equivalents, which suits us here precisely because the freight economics tolerate it. This is a market to serve with frequency rather than volume.

Compliance

Importing PPE into Sri Lanka

Import registration is completed by your Sri Lanka-registered consignee. We supply the manufacturer-side documentation that registration depends on.

Preferential duty
Under the India-Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement, a certificate of origin issued in India entitles qualifying consignments to preferential duty treatment. We issue the certification on request and it should be built into your landed cost comparison.
Standards
Standards published by the Sri Lanka Standards Institution apply, with the end client naming the applicable specification in a tender.
Import control
Certain goods require an import control licence. Your customs agent will confirm the position for the specific HS code.
Local requirement
The consignee must be a registered Sri Lankan importer with a valid taxpayer identification number.
Documents we issue
Commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin (including ISFTA where applicable), ISO 9001:2015 certificate, EN ISO 11612 and EN ISO 11611 fabric certificates, and mill test reports.

Certification

Quality system
ISO 9001:2015, covering the Mumbai manufacturing operation.
Flame retardant fabric
Our flame retardant garments are made from fabrics certified to EN ISO 11612 (clothing to protect against heat and flame) and EN ISO 11611 (clothing for welding and allied processes). Certification is held at fabric level. Fabric certificates and mill test reports for the lot used on your order are supplied with the consignment.
Certificates on request
Copies of the ISO 9001:2015 certificate and the applicable fabric certificates are issued with quotations and accompany every consignment.
Matching certification to your tender: flame retardant requirements are written differently by every client, and the fabric construction that satisfies one specification will not always satisfy another. Send us the relevant clause from your tender or HSE standard with your enquiry and we will confirm in writing which of our certified fabrics can be supplied against it, and exactly which certificates and test reports will accompany the goods.

Questions

Sri Lanka workwear supply: common questions

How quickly can you deliver to Colombo?

Two to four days sailing from Nhava Sheva, which is the shortest transit of any export market we serve. Production time sits ahead of that and depends on quantity and customisation, but the transit itself is short enough that air freight from Mumbai is practical even for modest consignments if a delivery date is tight.

What duty benefit applies under the India-Sri Lanka FTA?

A certificate of origin issued in India entitles qualifying consignments to preferential duty treatment under the India-Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement rather than the standard tariff. The applicable rate depends on the HS code and current schedule, so your clearing agent should confirm it. We issue the certification on request, and combined with the short sailing it gives Indian supply a landed cost advantage that suppliers shipping from elsewhere cannot match.

Can we order in smaller quantities rather than full containers?

Yes, and Sri Lanka is the market where this makes most sense of anywhere we ship. The short sailing keeps per-consignment freight cost low on part loads, so you can hold two or three weeks of stock and reorder frequently instead of tying up capital in a container. We will quote both ways so you can compare the landed cost honestly.

Do you supply apparel factories as well as heavy industry?

Yes, though they want different things. Factory compliance demand is largely work shirts, aprons, gloves, dust masks and eye protection at high unit volumes. Refinery, port and construction work wants coveralls, helmets and safety footwear, with FR specified where hydrocarbons are involved. We quote each duty separately rather than offering a single garment across both.

Do you supply flame retardant clothing for refinery and tank farm work?

Yes. Our FR garments are made from fabrics certified to EN ISO 11612 and EN ISO 11611, and the fabric certificates and mill test reports for the lot supplied accompany the consignment. Where the refinery or terminal operator names a specific standard in the tender, send us the clause and we will confirm in writing which of our certified fabrics can be supplied against it.
