The market

Supplying protective clothing to South Africa

South Africa is the largest protective clothing market on the continent by value, and the most industrially sophisticated. Deep-level gold and platinum mining, the Mpumalanga coal fields, the synthetic fuels complexes at Secunda and Sasolburg and the Eskom generation fleet together consume flame retardant and heavy-duty workwear on a scale no other African market approaches. Sanctum Work Wear manufactures in Mumbai and ships to Durban, Cape Town and Richards Bay.

This is also the hardest African market to enter, and it would be misleading to present it otherwise. South Africa has an established domestic workwear manufacturing industry, a compulsory-specification regime for protective equipment, and public and parastatal tenders that weight local content. The realistic route in is supplying South African PPE distributors and uniform houses who hold the client relationship, rather than bidding directly against local manufacturers. We are set up to supply that way, including private-label production under a distributor's own label.

Compliance

Importing PPE into South Africa

Import registration is completed by your South Africa-registered consignee. We supply the manufacturer-side documentation that registration depends on.

Regulator
The National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications administers compulsory specifications, which cover certain categories of personal protective equipment. Where a compulsory specification applies, approval must be held before the product can be sold.
Standards
SABS and SANS standards apply. The specific SANS specification is normally named by the end client in a tender, so confirm the clause before quoting.
Local content
Public sector and parastatal tenders commonly weight local content and broad-based empowerment credentials, which is why most import supply runs through a South African distributor.
Customs
Entry is processed by the South African Revenue Service against the standard import documentation set.
Documents we issue
Commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, ISO 9001:2015 certificate, EN ISO 11612 and EN ISO 11611 fabric certificates, and mill test reports for the supplied lot.

Certification

Quality system
ISO 9001:2015, covering the Mumbai manufacturing operation.
Flame retardant fabric
Our flame retardant garments are made from fabrics certified to EN ISO 11612 (clothing to protect against heat and flame) and EN ISO 11611 (clothing for welding and allied processes). Certification is held at fabric level. Fabric certificates and mill test reports for the lot used on your order are supplied with the consignment.
Certificates on request
Copies of the ISO 9001:2015 certificate and the applicable fabric certificates are issued with quotations and accompany every consignment.
Matching certification to your tender: flame retardant requirements are written differently by every client, and the fabric construction that satisfies one specification will not always satisfy another. Send us the relevant clause from your tender or HSE standard with your enquiry and we will confirm in writing which of our certified fabrics can be supplied against it, and exactly which certificates and test reports will accompany the goods.

Questions

South Africa workwear supply: common questions

Can an Indian manufacturer realistically compete in South Africa?

Honestly, not by bidding directly against established local manufacturers on public tenders, where local content and empowerment credentials carry weight. The route that does work is supplying South African PPE distributors and uniform houses who hold the client relationship and import in their own name. We produce private-label garments under a distributor's own woven label, care label and carton marking, which is usually the practical structure here.

What approvals are needed before selling PPE in South Africa?

Certain categories of personal protective equipment fall under compulsory specifications administered by the national regulator, and where one applies, approval must be held before the product can be sold. Your South African importer or distributor is best placed to confirm the current scope for the specific product. We supply the manufacturer-side documentation, including our ISO 9001:2015 certificate and EN ISO 11612 and EN ISO 11611 fabric certificates.

Do you supply flame retardant clothing for synfuels and power station work?

Yes. Our FR garments are made from fabrics certified to EN ISO 11612 and EN ISO 11611, with the fabric certificates and mill test reports for the lot supplied accompanying the consignment. South African clients frequently name a specific SANS specification in the tender, so send us that clause with your enquiry and we will confirm in writing what can be supplied against it before anyone commits.

How long is shipping from Mumbai to Durban?

Sea freight from Nhava Sheva to Durban typically runs sixteen to twenty-two days in transit, with Cape Town and Ngqura a little longer. Durban is the usual choice for Gauteng consignees given the inland corridor. Production time sits ahead of transit and depends on quantity, fabric and customisation.

Can you produce under our own brand for the South African market?

Yes, and for this market it is often the sensible arrangement. We manufacture private-label workwear with your woven label, care label, packing specification and carton marking, so the garment carries your brand into the client relationship while we manufacture behind it.
